In Lousada, in the Porto district, during the presentation of the Socialist candidate for the City Council, the Secretary General of the Socialist Party recalled that, when Brexit occurred in the United Kingdom, "a transversal team of several ministries was created, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs", a dynamic that he now wants to see adopted by the current Government.
"It is very important that the Ministry of Economy meets with representatives of these sectors as soon as possible and find mitigation measures and special support for these sectors," he noted, referring to several sectors, namely textiles and clothing, footwear, and wine.
Stating that "the impacts of the United States' tariff policy will be felt throughout the European Union and also in Portugal," José Luís Carneiro said that "there was already a forecast that, with rates of 10%, Europe in 2025 could see a drop in its wealth of around 30%" and that "it was estimated that by 2026 the loss of European income could reach around 50%."
"This means that, with rates at 30%, the impacts will be very significant. It's crucial that the government has thoughtful and structured responses to address these impacts, a genuine shock to our economy," he said.
José Luís Carneiro recalled that "for several months" the US has been talking about the possibility of adopting tariffs, which is why he wants to believe that "the Government will have solutions and measures to mitigate their effects.
The PS secretary-general was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the presentation of Nelson Oliveira's candidacy for the Lousada City Council, a session where in his speech he promised: "As secretary-general of the PS, and if I ever become prime minister, you can count on an integrated vision for the Baixo Tâmega region."
Regarding Lousada, he left three demands to Luís Montenegro's current executive, asking him to "fulfill simple objectives that are even easy to achieve."
"May the Lousada Land Registry Office, once and for all, be open every day of the week and have staff to serve our population. May the Government comply with the protocol I signed to rehabilitate the GNR station. And may it make the 45 apartments registered in the protocol established between the Government, the Housing Institute, and the City Council available to the people of Lousada," he stated.
In a well-attended candidacy presentation session, in which all candidates for the City Council, Municipal Assembly and Parish Councils were presented, José Luís Carneiro began by saying that he is "an uncompromising defender of the Territorial Development Pacts", and will therefore fight for the implementation of an integrated investment strategy with the municipalities of Baixo Tâmega in Parliament, in the European Parliament and with all the mayors in the region.
"The obstacles that still hinder our economic growth, which limit the growth of our wages and which limit opportunities for our youngest, must be addressed," he said.
